This custom steel handrail project was a geometric and technical challenge that our team at CraftIron was excited to take on. Designed for a modern space with multiple directional changes, this installation required precision engineering, expert metal fabrication, and strict attention to ADA compliance.
We fabricated a minimalist-style handrail system that wraps seamlessly down and around corners—combining architectural appeal with full accessibility code compliance. The clean lines and sleek silhouette are made possible by custom-designed steel brackets, also fabricated in-house. These brackets allow the rail to appear as though it's floating off the wall, while still delivering robust structural integrity capable of supporting heavy loads.
Nearly 90% of the steel handrail system was fabricated off-site at our workshop using high-precision tools and processes. The pieces were then transported and installed with meticulous care, ensuring exact alignment and a clean, continuous look.
This project showcases what’s possible when modern design meets craftsmanship in metalwork. Whether it’s a custom staircase railing, wall-mounted handrail, or a full architectural metal package, CraftIron delivers high-performance results with an emphasis on quality and style.

Custom Iron Handrails for a Stunning Backyard Stair and Ramp
In the hills of Santa Barbara and Montecito, we completed a standout custom ironwork project featuring a multi-section, curved handrail system spanning over 50 feet. This complex run began at an ADA-accessible ramp and flowed seamlessly down a flight of stone stairs, all set against a serene backdrop featuring a natural stone waterfall.
For strength and longevity—critical in outdoor coastal settings—we used core-drilled post installation. This technique ensures the handrail posts are solidly anchored by coring holes into the masonry and pouring them with rock-solid structural grout. This method delivers unmatched durability in changing weather conditions.
The project’s centerpiece was a 2-inch ornamental cap rail, chosen for both its visual impact and functional comfort. Due to the size and thickness, bending the cap rail to match the fluid curves of the path was a meticulous, hands-on process—demanding precision and patience to preserve a clean, elegant flow from top to bottom.
This project is a prime example of how form meets function in custom ironwork. The handrails not only provide essential safety and support, but also elevate the beauty of the client’s beloved backyard, blending seamlessly with the landscape and architecture.
